Ginkgo Biloba

What is Ginkgo Biloba?

Ginkgo Biloba has been documented in Chinese medicine for nearly 5000 years. Both the nuts from the ginkgo biloba tree and its leaves have been used medicinally.

Two main components cause Ginkgo biloba's medicinal effects: ginkgo flavone glycosides and terpene lactones. The flavone is the main reason for Ginkgo biloba's antioxidant qualities, and its effectiveness in treating the brain and central nervous system.

Terpene lactone is associated with increased circulation and protection of nerve cells.

In addition, the ginkgolides appear to inhibit substances which cause platelets to clump, leading to nerve damage, inflammation, and poor blood flow in the nervous system. Ginkolides also protect the central nervous system when it is temporarily deprived of oxygen, as with stroke.

Ginkgo Biloba is useful in treating:

Alzheimer's Disease, asthma, atherosclerosis, depression, macular degeneration, Parkinson's Disease, retinopathy.

Recommended dosage for Ginkgo Biloba:

Up to 240 mg daily.

Important Ginkgo Biloba Note:

Patients taking anti-coagulants or undergoing aspirin treatment should consult with a medical professional before taking ginkgo biloba.
