Potassium
What is Potassium?
Potassium is a mineral that is needed by the body to regulate water balance, acidity, blood pressure, neuromuscular function, and protein and carbohydrate metabolism.
Potassium deficiency is rare when a balanced diet is kept. Deficiencies may occur in diets that are low in fruits, or in the case of prolonged vomiting or diarrhea.
Potassium and sodium work together in the body to maintain muscle tone, blood pressure, water balance, and other functions. Many researchers believe that part of the blood pressure problem caused by too much salt (which contains sodium) is made worse by too little dietary potassium.
- Potassium, when taken in conjunction with magnesium, helps to prevent Congestive Heart Failure.
- A vegetarian diet usually prevents high blood pressure. This is probably due to the high potassium and fiber intake associated with such diets.
- Both Potassium reduces urinary calcium levels, making it effective in treating kidney stones.
